What did that ND do to deserve getting chopped up and its body panels put on a crap-tastic MR2 Spyder? :(

I think that looks 1000X better than any miata I have ever seen.

I...I actually like it. Aside from some silly panel gaps it actually looks like a decent custom car.

.... Aside from the panel gaps, that actually looks pretty cool.

I love it, that’s pretty cool, can we make all the MR2's like this?

Looks pretty awesome.

It improves the look of the MR2 Spider imo :-P

The MR2 spyder is better than the Miata.
Poor MR2 spyder, people do such terrible things to you just because you’re ugly.
Though I don’t hate this setup

Wow I never like hackjobs like these but that looks sweet and well done. Definitely an improvement in styling for a MR-S.

Y’know? I’ve seen worse.

I like it. It’s like a mini huracan

I’m not overly sold on the rear but the front of it looks spot on, have you got a front pic without the silly cartoon car on it?
![]() 07/11/2017 at 15:19 |

That’s actually not bad.
The gaps could be tighter, and the fender/tire combo is overboard, but it stands out in a good way. And it’s loads better looking than a stock MR2.
![]() 07/11/2017 at 15:20 |

Looks better than a stock MR2, that’s for sure.

Many many things are better looking than a stock Spyder.

The dump I took this morning is an improvement over an MR-S, but yeah styline wise this isn’t bad. Just an odd choice of donor considering the ND is a better car.

The MR2 spyder is interesting because it’s better than very few cars. Period pieces comparing the Spyder to the NB2 resulted in an overwhelming victory for the Miata. More storage, more interior space, faster, better handling, larger aftermarket, easier to work on, cheaper parts, etc. etc. etc.
People were trying to convince me to get an MRS over an NB2 and I was having none of it. Neither were the facts, it would seem.

Few things can make one look worse...

You could make it look like a 986 Boxster.

When life gives you lemons, give ‘em stretched tires and a body kit.

you could drive an NA through those panel gaps

Meh. The MR-S is better than the NB2 in objective terms of handling and acceleration despite the fact that little changed from the time the MR2 was built to compete with the NB1. But you are welcome to believe whatever you want.
Here’s an article where the MR2 spyder is quicker and manages better handling and braking numbers. It also just barely loses, but based primarily on subjective factors:
http://www.motortrend.com/cars/toyota/mr2-spyder/2002/mazda-miata-toyota-mr2-spyder/
If you wanna talk subjective metrics, that’s cool, but I’m not interested.
Would love to see these overwhelming victories that you’ve read though.

Aside from the panel gap issues and the stretched tires I kinda like it.
![]() 07/11/2017 at 16:04 |

But is it really? I’d rather have the MR-S.
It is a not too old, analog car. Hydraulic steering, cable throttle, no electronic doodads and traction controls, mid-engine, and lighter.
What does the ND have over it? A bit more power, tons of tech (maybe too much), direct stick shift, and sexy.
For looking at and being a proud owner > ND
For driving, give me the MR-S, I won’t be looking at the outside of the car during that time.

Huh. I think with some fine tuning of the panel gaps and addressing the rear end, this could actually look good.
![]() 07/11/2017 at 16:32 |

To be fair, the contemporary Miata was also a better car than the MR-S. Slightly heavier but better weight distribution, more room, and a far better/cheaper aftermarket and easier to repair/mod.

The only ND parts I see here are headlights. The rest are cheap Lamborghini front ends and a butchered GTR butt.

Looks like a Celica hood, too

Hmm I would want to drive it.

I REALLY like the front but I hate the back
![]() 07/11/2017 at 19:07 |

Agreed. I’ve read only close toss up comparisons between the two. Miatas were never the clear winner over the MR-S. In fact, MR-S has better braking and handling and off the line acceleration, obviously, because the engine is in the right place and the weight is distributed even more centrally than the Miata. Also 45/55 weight distribution trumps 50/50 in any performance metric.
The Miata of the time will likely beat it in shifter feel and driving ergonomics since its a Mazda. Plus the FR layout gives much more confidence on roads where you can’t take it 10/10ths.
![]() 07/11/2017 at 19:26 |

Comparing these two, the miata is 150 lbs heavier, 50/50 isn’t better than the MR-S’ 45/55, and the engine is in the front instead of middle.
Miata does have more storage room, direct shifter, looks cuter, sounds much better. As for cost of maintenance and repair, it’s a Toyota Corolla driving backwards with even less weight. Nothing on earth is gonna be cheaper than that.

Expensive. Bitch to work on. catalytic converter issues. Expensive parts. Looks like a Boxster that fell off the ugly tree.

Yup. Try to tell that to the op. Lol
![]() 07/11/2017 at 20:16 |

Ok. I heard about issues with the exhaust manifold on a lot of the 1ZZ cars. So the catalytic converter has problems too? Just another reason for turbo or 2zz swap.

I’ve been considering getting an MR2 Spyder. So I’m curious about it.
